Set up for the Windows XP Wireless Client

To configure your client to work with the UTHSCH wireless network, please download and run the
following tool:

Wireless Network Configuration Tool

How does it work?

Older versions of Windows wireless clients are not supported by IT Security.  If you are running an older version of Windows and cannot upgrade to XP SP2, then try the Aegis client install documentation.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE WINDOWS XP WIRELESS CLIENT AND PASSWORD CHANGES – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

There is a known issue with the Windows XP Wireless client that you need to be aware of if you are going to use it to access the UTHSCH wireless network.  The first time you successfully connect to a network which requires a username and password, Windows XP will store your credentials and never ask for them again.  This becomes a potential issue when you change your UTHSCH username and password.  If your password is expired when you try to connect to the wireless network there is no problem.  Windows XP will simply prompt you to change your password before you are allowed to log on.  If, however, you change your password through some other means (for example, you are prompted to change your password when you log on to the desktop machine you normally use), a significant problem can occur.  The Windows XP client will repeatedly present the wrong credentials to the authentication servers, and it is possible that you could lock your UTHSCH user account so that you cannot log in anywhere.  This is an issue which Microsoft knows about, but has no intention of fixing it in the foreseeable future.  IT Security provides the following two workarounds to help deal with this issue.

If you have changed your UTHSCH password and would like to remove the old settings from your computer please execute the Wireless Network Configuration Tool again.  In addition to checking your wireless networking settings, this will remove all stored wireless networking credentials from your computer, and force you to enter your username and password the next time you connect to the UTHSCH wireless network.  Using this tool you will only have to enter the new username and password once per password change, but you will have to run it every time you change your password.

The second workaround for this issue IT Security provides only is a tool that automatically removes your wireless networking credentials each time you start your computer.  Using this method you will only need to execute this script one time, but you will have to enter your UTHSCH username and password each time you start your computer and connect to our wireless network.  To use this tool, you must have access to local administrator credentials for your computer.

Automatically Remove Stored Wireless Networking Credentials

HOW DO THE TOOLS WORK?

This section will explain how these tools accomplish their job.  If you are curious exactly what the tool you are about to run will do to your computer, please read below.

Wireless Network Configuration Tool

The wireless configuration tool automatically fills in the appropriate information into your Windows XP SP2 wireless client for accessing the UTHSCH wireless network.  Specifically the tool:

  • Creates a new wireless network
  • Enters the UTHSCH SSID of “J*5903GDF%!!PMN”
  • Configures the client to use PEAP authentication.
  • Tells your client the name of our authentication servers so you know who to trust.

By using our tool instead of manually configuring your client you can greatly lower the chance of accidental mistakes preventing you from accessing the wireless network.

Note:

If you prefer to configure your client manually, you can still access our old configuration guide HERE.

Automatic Credential Removal Tool

All wireless networking credentials are stored in the registry under the key HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EAPOL\UserEapInfo.  This tool creates a job under “C:\Windows\Tasks” which deletes this key each time you start your computer.  This will fool Windows into thinking that you have never logged in to the wireless network so that it will prompt you for credentials when you connect.
