This
was configured and
documented on a Windows XP SP2 computer. If you do not have Windows XP
SP2 installed this should still work, but you may have to adapt these
settings to your computer as SP2 significantly changed the Windows
wireless client. This document assumes that you have already
successfully setup your wireless network card.
- Access
the Network
Connections folder. There
are quite a few ways to access this
depending on how your computer has been customized. These instructions
assume a default Windows XP Start Menu configuration.

- Click
on Start.
- Move
the mouse to the words "Connect
To".
- Click
on your network card.
Usually this is called "Wireless
Network Connection"
as shown in the picture above.

- In
the box that appears on
your desktop, click "Change
advanced settings" on the
left side.

- Click
on the "Wireless
Networks" tab.

- Enter J*5903GDF%!!PMN into the "Network name
(SSID):" field.
- Click
on the "Authentication"
tab.
- In
the "EAP type:"
dropdown box select "Protected
EAP (PEAP)".
- Uncheck
the box labeled "Authenticate
as computer when computer information is available".
- Click
the "Properties"
button.

- Check
the "Connect to
these servers:" box.
- In
the field below that enter
the following:
sentry.uth.tmc.edu;gadmnetops3.hsc.uth.tmc.edu (***No spaces).
- In
the list of Trusted
Root Certification Authorities scroll down until you see "Secure
Server Certification Authority"
and check the box next to it.
- Check the box labeled "Do
not prompt user to authorize new servers or trusted certification
authorities".
- Check
the box next to "Enable
Fast Reconnect".
- Click Configure.

- Uncheck
the box labeled "Automatically
use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)".
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
- Now,
when your computer is in
range of the UTHSCH network you will see the balloon shown above pop up
from the system tray.
- Click
on it.

If
you've set up your connection
correctly, you should see the balloon shown above pop up from the
system tray. This means you have successfully configured your computer
to work on the UTHSCH wireless network. If you do not see this pop up,
check and make sure you have the correct password. If that is ok, walk
through these steps again to make sure you didn't miss anything. Each
step is important.
At
this point you are connected
to the UTHSCH wireless network, but there is another issue to address.
The WindowsXP wireless client contains a bug where the client cannot
handle changing passwords. Because UTHSCH policy requires users change
their passwords periodically, if you stop now your wireless will work
until you are forced to change your password. The following
instructions are a workaround devised by IT Security to address this
problem.
NOTE:
The following instructions
assume that the user implementing this workaround is a machine
administrator. If your particular situation involves users who are not
machine administrators, please contact Trey
Dismukes in IT Security, and he
will work with your department to
find a workaround for this issue.

- Right
and select Save-as from the menu that appears.

- Click
on the "Desktop" button
on the left, and click Save.
- Click
Save.

- Click
on Start, and then
select Run from the Start Menu.
- In
the box that pops up, type
"C:\Windows\tasks" and click OK.

- Drag
the file you saved to
your desktop to this window, and let go.
- Double-click
on "Clean EAP
Credentials from the Registry".

- Enter
your Windows logon
password in the two boxes (NOT necessarily your wireless LDAP password).
- Click
OK.
At
this point the
workaround is complete. If you have any problems with this guide please
contact Trey
Dismukes.
