Set Up for Apple Airport Cards for Wireless

(Print Version)

  1. Configuration
  2. Operating Advice
  3. Troubleshooting

*NOTES*

  • This guide was produced using a PowerBook G4 laptop on OS 10.3.4. All updates have been applied that are required by Apple’s Software Update, including the latest Airport driver, version 3.4.2b1.

Configuration

Apple provides a very nice wizard, AirPort Setup Assistant, for setting up your Airport card, unfortunately we can’t use that because the wizard only works with security standards lower than those adopted by the University.

1. Click on the Finder Icon in your taskbar, click on the Applications button on the sidebar, then find

the Internet Connect icon and double click to open it.

2. From the Summary windows select File, then New 802.1x connection.

3. In the 802.1X tab click on Configuration, then Edit Configurations.

4. In the Configuration window click on the + button in the bottom left corner to add new settings. Next, fill in the fields to match this:

- Description: UTHSC
- Network port: Airport
- User Name: <INSERT YOUR UTHSCH LDAP USER NAME HERE>
- Password: <INSERT YOUR UTHSCH LDAP PASSWORD NAME HERE>
- Wireless Network(this field is case sensitive): J*5903GDF%!!PMN
- Authentication: TTLS

**Note: If you do not know your UTHSCH LDAP user name and password, go HERE.

5. Highlight TTLS and click on the Configure button and make changes to match these settings:

- TTLS Inner Authentication: PAP
- Outer Identity: anonymous

6. Click OK twice to finish. Once you are back at the 802.1x window, you should see all your settings filled in. Next click on the Connect button to test the settings. A window will come up for a certificate. Choose Show Certificate. Select the "Always trust these certificates" checkbox and then choose Continue.

7. You should now be connected.

Operating Advice

To set your Airport card to automatically connect to the wireless network:
1. Make sure you are currently connected to the wireless network by clicking on the Airport icon on your Taskbar:

2. Open System Preferences, choose Network and click on the Airport connection. In the By default, join button choose Automatic:

3. Click on Apply Now to finish. To test, turn off the Airport card and turn it back on—it should connect without any intervention.

• Apple recommends leaving the Airport card turned off when not in use in order to save battery usage:

• If you are using your Mac to connect to other wireless access points in addition to the UT network it’s recommended that you set up Locations in the Network Preferences. In System Preferences; choose Network; then Location; then New Location. Once you have them configured correctly you can choose the correct location quickly by click on the Apple icon on the menu bar and going to Location.

Troubleshooting

What to do if you see this message:

• Make sure that your Airport card is turned on. The 802.1x connection will not automatically turn on the card for you.
• Double check that you are using your correct LDAP username and password. To double-check your LDAP username and password go to http://www.uth.tmc.edu/netcenter/ldap-explanation.htm. Remember your LDAP username/password is probably not what you use to login to your desktop PC.
• Restart the Airport card, i.e., turn it off then on again.
• Ask your LAN Manager to ensure the Access Point is online and functioning properly.
